As a little girl I wasn’t particularly drawn to the sparkling multicolored plastics that lined the isles of toy stores, perhaps it was because I was raised on natural wooden blocks and Waldorf dolls made from wool and yarn. But it wasn’t until recently that I began to appreciate these magical reflective plastics. Although awful for the environment, and cheaply made, there is a certain innocence that can be found in stick-on earrings or sequins. What I’m getting at is, lately I’ve seen many people finding ways to put these tacky objects on their clothing, I’m not talking about bedazzling or whatever that is, because I feel like that would fall in the “bad tacky” category (yes, tacky can be good!… sometimes if done correctly). But seeing people find a tasteful way of keeping childhood playfulness alive in their clothing is inspiring, and I attempt to do so in even the smallest of ways in my own outfits.

Ribnovo is in the western Rhodope about 19 miles, from Gotse Delchev. In this small village lives nearly 3,000 inhabitants (they call themselves Pomaks or Slavs). The people in this village follow deeply rooted traditions that have been practiced for generations. one of these traditions being a three day weddings ceramony celebrated in the winter months. On the third day of the wedding, the bride is decorated with a thick layer of white facial cream and after colorful sequins are places in various patterns across her face. When all is done the bride is veiled with a beautiful red fabric.

The first time I saw photographs of these facinating brides I was reminded of the Comme des Garçons Fall collection, back in 2005. im not sure what Rei Kawakubo’s inspiration were for the line or the models makeup, but I found various relationships between the Pomak bride’s garb and the chic fall collection from 2005.

Margot’s look in The Royal Tenenbaums is simply iconic. her blonde side parted bob dressed with a red plastic hair slide, and toffee colored mink fur coat. portrays her character perfectly. When Gwyneth was cast in her role she said:

“As soon as I knew I was wearing the little Lacoste dresses and loafers and a fur coat, I said to myself, okay, I get it. It became pretty clear to me who Margot was.”
